Massachusetts Constitutional Convention convenes in Cambridge.

September 1, 1779

The convention meets initially in the First Church in Cambridge. Samuel Adams and James Bowdoin of Boston and John Adams of Braintree are elected as the committee to draft the constitution on September 4, 1779. The convention adjourns while John Adams does most of the drafting, then resumes from October 28 to November 12, 1779. Subsequent meetings are held at the Old State House and the Long Lane Meeting House in 1780.*
